Water Tower

Water Tower

6″ x 8″ oil on canvas

I’m dissatisfied with this one but can’t quite put my finger on the reason. There are awkwardly painted passages but I’m fond of awkwardly painted passages that somehow work anyway. I’m not that great at producing them on purpose but, I guess my strategy is to continue to paint awkwardly and hope for the best.

  1. The composition is a little odd but I still like your style. “Awkard” you call it? I call it painterly.
Maybe it is the way the line of the bridge lines up with the line of the roof.
There is a tension that I see often in urban scenes.

  2. Frank, I appreciate your critical eye. You make a good point about the roof line. I was considering repainting the lower part if my attention span holds up I may take another crack at it.

  3. Personally I like it! I wouldn’t change it. I have a really tough time painting buildings and curse my awkwardness. Good for you for embracing it, because it looks great!

  4. Bill This is a wonderful painting. As someone who’s also painted the water tower as industrial landscape landmark, I like how you’ve kept the painting loose. I tend to tighten up too much. There’s a lot of linear quality to this piece as well which works in the composition.

  5. Cooper, Thanks, I appreciate your comment. Although I haven’t commented yet, yours is one of my favorite landscape sites. I’ve been an admirer of your work for some time.
